SCOPE OF POSITION

The Business Data Analyst’s primary focus within the Investment Operations & Applications Branch is to ensure all applications and tools have the complete information required for business users on a daily basis.  The daily cycle of all investment systems are monitored to ensure data integrity and availability within the Investment applications.  Additionally, the role requires qualitative checks and controls being assessed as it relates to investment data management.  The role will also participate in investment system upgrades and implementations.  The position requires strong analytical skills coupled with investment operations knowledge including pricing and setup of securities and systems implementation experience.  Strong knowledge with investment instrument security characteristics including bonds, equities and derivative products such as options, swaps and futures.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures the quality of the security master records across investment systems such as trading, portfolio management, data warehouse and analytics;
  • Ensure the timeliness and completeness of daily data feeds from several internal/external sources;
  • Validates the quality of the data fed into the various investment applications including portfolio management, data warehouse & performance & risk analytics tools;
  • Creates data integrity reporting to assess potential data issues resident in the various Investment applications;
  • Develops naming conventions and definitional standards for data and reports and monitors adherence to the standards;
  • Performs business & data analysis in order to resolve data issues with vendors and Investment business areas;
  • Reviews various system error logging in order to assess the corrections required;
  • Reconciles data as required to various sources to assess quality;
  • Validates and reviews securities pricing methodologies to ensure calculations;
  • Provides problem solving, troubleshooting of issues and consulting support for analytics systems functions and data supplier issues;
  • Provides support to users in the development of new reports and in the resolution of reporting and other data issues;
  • Provides end-user support for the Investment applications including the development of new reports and system interfaces, training, general problem solving and process improvements;
  • Participates in the investment systems upgrades including data conversion, testing and implementation;
  • Share joint responsibility for enabling the project team to effectively execute work activities in order to achieve project goals and objectives;
  • Develop a strong proficiency with the computer applications being utilized for the Investment business (Portia, CRD, PACE, Bloomberg, Barra etc.);
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of investment products and customer needs in order to respond quickly and accurately to questions and problems that arise;
  • Develop effective working relationships with investment management and operations, custodians, auditors, system vendors and others in the industry.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of investment management principles and practices with exposure to marketable securities including derivatives.
  • Knowledge of investment data uses for security master characteristics, corporate actions, risk analytics etc
  • Knowledge of investment instrument pricing attributes.
  • Experience working within an Investment operations environment, back and/or middle office and/or in an investment and financial systems administration, implementation and reporting.
  • Highly analytical with strong consulting and problem solving ability.
  • Proactive and results oriented with good time management skills and the ability to work well under pressure and focus on multiple tasks concurrently.
  • A team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Minimum education: Post secondary training in finance including University degree in Mathematics, Commerce & Finance or equivalent experience.  Enrolment in CGA, CMA or CFA preferred.  Completion of Canadian Securities Course an asset.
  • Experience with ODBC report writers such as Crystal, Access etc required.   Experience with SQL queries.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office including excel spreadsheets with real time links and access databases.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for analysis and problem solving.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively in fast-paced, multiple project environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills are essential to deal with all levels of staff and outside contacts.
